Carborundum abrasives

Carborundum abrasives also callled silicon carbide (SiC) abrasives are super-hard artificial minerals (with a Mohs hardness of 9.5) synthesized by high-temperature smelting of quartz sand and petroleum coke as core raw materials. Carborundum abrasives divided into two major categories: black silicon carbide and green silicon carbide. Due to its high thermal conductivity, high-temperature resistance and impact resistance, it has become an irreplaceable core grinding medium in precision manufacturing, refractory materials and the semiconductor industry.

Production process

High purity and precise particle size control

Raw material ratio and smelting

Mix quartz sand and petroleum coke (green silicon carbide needs to be mixed with salt), and react at a high temperature of 1800 to 2000℃ in a resistance furnace for 100 to 120 hours to form silicon carbide crystals.
Adding 0.5 to 5% metallic aluminum can enhance the crystal hardness and optimize the grinding performance.

Crushing and Shaping

The particles are roughly crushed to ≤5mm, and then processed by a shaping machine into elliptical particles ≤2mm (accounting for ≥80%), which enhances the subsequent grinding efficiency

Fine grinding and classification

Ball milling process: Wet ball milling or jet milling is adopted, with a controlled rotational speed of 200 r/min, a ball-to-material ratio of 10:1, and a duration of 40 hours, to obtain micro-powder with a d50 of 9.5 to 11.5μm.

Graded purification
Primary vortex classification: Separate the finished product A (particle size 6.5-5.5μm);
Secondary impeller classification: Extract ultrafine powder B (3.0-4.5μm), meeting semiconductor-grade requirements.

Post-processing

Acid washing is used to remove surface oxides, followed by magnetic separation for iron removal after drying to ensure a purity of ≥98%.

Abrasive and grinding tool manufacturing

Bonded grinding tools: resin/ceramic grinding wheels, cutting discs (black carborundum abrasives is suitable for cast iron and stone; Green carborundum abrasives is used in hard alloys.
Coated abrasives: sandpaper, abrasive belts (P24-P400 grit size), highly efficient for grinding metals and woods.
Free abrasive: Sandblasting (G16-G80 particle size), to clean the oxide layer on the surface of steel structures.

High-end material processing

Semiconductor slicing: Green silicon carbide micro-powder is used to cut monocrystalline silicon rods with precision reaching the μm level.
Optical component polishing: W20-W40 micro-powder is used for fine polishing of glass and sapphire surfaces.

Refractory Materials and Metallurgy

High-temperature kiln furniture (push plates, saggars), blast furnace linings, heat shock resistance is enhanced, and the service life of equipment is increased by 30%.
Metallurgical deoxidizer, enhancing the purity of molten steel.
